Hidden car rental costs in Morocco

When you compare car rental offers, the daily price is the first thing you see. But the real cost of a rental depends on many other details. Knowing them in advance helps you compare offers fairly and avoid unpleasant surprises at the end of your trip.

Here is a checklist of the points to clarify before you book any car in Morocco.

1. The security deposit

Almost every rental involves a security deposit, held during the rental and returned at the end if everything is in order.

Ask:

  • What is the exact amount?
  • Which payment methods are accepted?
  • When and how is it returned?
  • In which cases can part of it be kept?

2. Insurance and the excess

Insurance is essential, but what it covers varies.

Ask:

  • What does the insurance included in the price cover?
  • What is the excess, the amount you would pay yourself in case of damage?
  • Is there an option to reduce the excess, and at what price?
  • What is excluded - for example tyres, windscreen, underside of the car, or driving on unpaved roads?

3. The fuel policy

Fuel policies are a common source of misunderstanding.

Ask:

  • At what level is the tank at pickup?
  • At what level must it be returned?
  • What happens if it is returned with less fuel?

Tip: photograph the fuel gauge at pickup and at return.

4. Mileage and where you can drive

Ask:

  • Is mileage unlimited or limited?
  • Are there areas or types of roads where the car may not be driven?

Share your planned route when you book so that everything is clear from the start.

5. Additional drivers

If several people will drive, each driver usually needs to be declared.

Ask:

  • Can additional drivers be added?
  • What documents are needed for them?
  • Is there an extra charge?

6. Pickup, delivery and return

Ask:

  • Where can the car be collected and returned?
  • Is delivery to another address possible, and at what cost?
  • What happens if you return the car late?

7. Extras

Extras can add up. Ask about the price of anything you need, such as a child seat, before you confirm.

8. Costs on the road

Some costs are not part of the rental itself but belong in your budget:

  • Fuel.
  • Motorway tolls, paid along the way.
  • Parking, especially in cities and near old medinas.

9. Damage and the condition of the car

This is where most disputes happen. Protect yourself:

  1. Inspect the car carefully with the agent at pickup.
  2. Make sure every existing mark is noted on the check-out document.
  3. Take photos and a video, including the wheels, windscreen and interior.
  4. Repeat the inspection at return, together with the agent.
  5. Keep your photos until the deposit has been returned.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the security deposit and when is it returned?

The deposit is an amount held during the rental to cover possible damage or missing fuel. Ask the agency for the exact amount, the accepted payment methods and when it is returned.

What does the insurance excess mean?

The excess is the maximum amount you may have to pay yourself in case of damage. Ask for the amount in writing before you sign.

Are tolls included in the rental price?

Motorway tolls are paid by the driver along the way, so plan them in your budget.

How do I avoid disputes about damage?

Inspect the car with the agent at pickup, point out every existing mark, and take photos and a video. Do the same at return.
